Osteoporosis is a common condition affecting both men and women that weakens bones and increases the risk of fractures especially as we age. More than half of women over 50 and around 10% of men will develop osteoporosis. It is the leading cause of fractures in postmenopausal women and older men.
Diagnosing Osteoporosis
At Greenwald Endocrinology, we specialize in diagnosing and treating osteoporosis, osteopenia, and low bone mass, which can increase the risk of fractures. These conditions are often asymptomatic, and many people are unaware they have them until they experience a fracture.
Osteoporosis is typically diagnosed with a bone mineral density test (DXA scan). Once diagnosed, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation, including a thorough medical history, physical exam, and blood work. A 24-hour urine test for calcium is also done to assess calcium intake and rule out other conditions, such as idiopathic hypercalciuria.
Treating Osteoporosis
After completing your evaluation, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan. This plan may include lifestyle modifications, dietary recommendations, exercise programs, and medications when necessary. Dr. Bonnie Wolf Greenwald understands that many patients are concerned about osteoporosis medications. However, all treatments aim to reduce the risk of fractures. Some therapies work by decreasing bone resorption (e.g., bisphosphonates like Fosamax and Reclast), while others stimulate bone formation (e.g., Forteo, Tymlos, and Evenity).
With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Greenwald offers expert care and will help develop a customized treatment plan tailored to your needs.
Other Bone Health Disorders We Treat
Hypocalcemia and Hypercalcemia (Calcium Imbalances)
Calcium is essential for healthy bones, nerve function, and muscle contractions. When calcium levels are too high or too low, it can cause significant health problems.
- Hypocalcemia (Low Calcium): Symptoms include muscle cramps and tingling, and it often occurs after thyroid surgery or due to autoimmune conditions.
- Hypercalcemia (High Calcium): Symptoms include kidney stones, fatigue, bone pain, constipation, and brain fog. One common cause is hyperparathyroidism.
At Greenwald Endocrinology, we specialize in diagnosing and managing calcium imbalances, identifying the underlying causes to ensure appropriate treatment.
Parathyroid Disorders
The parathyroid glands, located behind the thyroid in the neck, are responsible for producing parathyroid hormone (PTH), which helps regulate calcium levels in the body. Disorders of the parathyroid can lead to various health issues.
- Hyperparathyroidism: Excessive PTH production causes high calcium levels, osteoporosis, and kidney stones. The most common cause is a parathyroid adenoma (benign growth of the parathyroid gland).
- Hypoparathyroidism: Insufficient PTH production leads to low calcium levels and muscle spasms. This condition is often caused by damage or removal of the glands during surgery.
